Or maybe it just screams Italy, but you can’t seem to put your finger on what exactly this familiar scooter is.

This adorable scooter is actually a Vespa – a classic icon of Italy!
​
Invented in 1946, it recently celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2016!
​
With over 18 million Vespas sold worldwide over 5 continents, Vespas have become universal with Italy, having been featured in various movies like The Lizzie McGuire Movie, Ratatouille and more.
Known for its signature steel body and unique shape, Vespas were actually designed by aeronautical engineer Corradino D'Ascanio who hated the usual bulky look of motorcycles and wanted something sleek and smooth.
The name “Vespa”, translating to wasp in Italian, was created when the founder of Vespa, Enrico Piaggio, exclaimed that the shape of the scooter resembled a wasp with its thick rear and narrow waist. Early versions of the Vespa also created buzzing sounds that resembled that of an insect.
Representing freedom and non-conformity, youth, and the revolution of the future, the popularity of Vespas have spread across the globe, with Vespiti (Vespa fans) passionately riding their Vespas down the roads worldwide.
Did you also know that there was actually a Vespa factory here right on the shores of our sunny island? Established in April 1965 pre-independence in Jurong by Goh Keng Swee, all classic Vespas in Singapore were actually made in Singapore itself!
